Hello from the Kindy 1 classroom!

All year long we’ve been learning about all different types of foods such as fruits, vegetables, dairy foods, meats, breads and grains. We’ve learned that these foods are “healthy foods that are important to eat for our growing minds and bodies.

This month we learned about a new food topic called “unhealthy foods”. Kara told us that unhealthy foods are ok to eat once in a while but we don’t want to eat them all the time because they can make us not feel well!

To introduce new topics, Kara has us play flashcard games in order to get familiar with the vocabulary. This flashcard game was one we had never played before. It was called “Crazy Bus”.

Kara was the driver of the crazy bus. Everyone sat in a circle and she showed us a “unhealthy food” flashcard. When she stopped at us we had to say the word on the flashcard.

“What’s this?” “It’s sausage!” “Yes, great job!”

After we said the correct answer, we got to hop onboard the crazy bus!

As more people answered the questions, the bus got longer and longer!

The bus ride started to get crazier and crazier! “Crazy Bus, Crazy Bus, riding on the Crazy Bus!”

The bus took a ride down the hallway!

We were laughing the whole time! We loved the Crazy Bus ride!

After our flashcard games we felt more familiar with the vocabulary so Kara had another activity planned for us. She gave us a sheets of paper that had pictures of both “healthy and unhealthy” foods.

First, Kara told us to carefully cut out each of the pictures.

We made sure to be very careful and to cut slowly. We have gotten so much better at using scissors!

When we were finished cutting out all the pictures, Kara told us to separate the food pictures into “healthy” and “unhealthy”.

We did a great job sorting through the different food groups and putting them in the correct category!

“Is milk healthy or unhealthy?” “Milk is healthy!” “Yes, great job!”

Once we were finished sorting, we glued each of the photos to the appropriate labeled paper. There were lots of pictures to glue!

Once all the pictures were glued, we used the boards to play Bingo! We started with the “healthy” food board.

“Please put a bingo piece on the picture with a “chicken”. “You found it, nice work!”

After we played with the “healthy” board,  we used our “unhealthy” board.

If we got a bingo, Kara would check our boards.

“Kara, I got a bingo!” “What are these?” “They’re nachos!” “Correct, awesome job!”

Great job, Kindy 1! Keep eating your “healthy” foods so you can grow big and strong like Macho Man, and remember it’s ok to have a treats in moderation!
